Cana Island Lighthouse

Travel back in time and explore one of Door County Wisconsin’s most popular lighthouses that’s been standing watch on the shore of Lake Michigan for more than 140 years.

Investigate the entire 8.7-acre island that includes the 89-foot-tall light tower, the original home of the lighthouse keeper and his family, and the oil house where fuel for the light was stored.

The highlight of any Cana Island visit is climbing the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase to reach the gallery deck. The outside deck delivers a sweeping view of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula.

While the ascent is fun for visitors, imagine the lighthouse keeper’s job as he trudged up and down the steps each night, carrying heated lard to keep the light burning!

This month’s book is The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan.

Death and LifeA master reporter’s landmark work of contemporary ecology.

The Great Lakes hold 20 percent of the world’s freshwater, and they provide food, work, and weekend fun for tens of millions of Americans. Yet they are under threat as never before.

In a work of narrative reporting in the vein of Rachel Carson and Elizabeth Kolbert, prize-winning reporter Dan Egan delivers an eye-opening portrait of our nation’s greatest natural resource as it faces ecological calamity. He tells the story of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Chicago ship canal — good ideas in their time that have had horrendous consequences. He explains how invasive species such as Asian carp, sea lamprey, and zebra mussels have decimated native species and endanger the entire United States. And he examines new risks, such as unsafe drinking water, the threat of water diversions, and “dead zones” that cover hundreds of square miles of water — while showing how the Great Lakes can be restored and preserved for generations to come.

Maritime Tower Project Support Meeting

Come support the Maritime Tower project!

The Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) has run out of time with the current Planned Unit Development (PUD) permit that would allow the museum to continue with the project. On May 17 DCMM will be asking the Plan Commission for approval to renew this permit while we continue on to the second half of our fundraising activities.  Please meet at the City Building on Michigan Street, May 17, 6 pm in the Common Council  Chambers to show your support for the DCMM Maritime Tower project.

For four decades, the Door County Maritime Museum has educated and entertained the public while working hard to preserve rich maritime history. Now, the museum is ready to take a major leap forward with an exciting new initiative: expanding its Sturgeon Bay facility with a spectacular, 11-story Maritime Tower filled with state-of-the-art exhibits for all ages. Evoking the romance of North America’s lighthouses, it will serve as a striking visual landmark on the Sturgeon Bay waterfront.

The additional Maritime Tower will be dedicated to promoting the world’s most extensive inland waterways system and recognizing the region’s vast contributions to shipbuilding, recreational boating, and marine related businesses.

With ten years in the planning, the new Maritime Tower will become a lasting celebration showcasing the inland maritime contributions to the economy, commemorating the value of maritime activities, and conveying these successes to the public. The Maritime Tower will be a major attraction for tourism, business conventions, and the general public.  Learn more about the Maritime Tower Project.
