Keith Miller of Northbrook, IL, earned Best of Show with his boat “Time Bandit”.
In collaboration with the West Side Business Association’s Maritime on Madison festival.
The Boat Festival gets under Friday evening at 4 p.m. with the building portion of the Sikaflex Challenge. Live music with Dr. Bombay will fill the museum grounds Friday evening from 5-9 p.m. with concessions being served. Attendees will also get a chance to see some of the classic vessels that will arrive early.
As in the past, there will be an assortment of watercraft both in and out of the water. The number of in-water runabouts is expected to increase this year and will share the spotlight with sailboats, kayaks and canoes. The Edith M. Becker, a 64-foot schooner will also be on-hand and giving tours.
The Sikaflex Challenge involves two-person teams required to build a boat with limited materials in just four hours Friday evening in order to garner points to carry over into Saturday’s in-water race. The not-so-aesthetically pleasing, but still oh-so-fun Sikaflex vessels always draw a crowd, especially on Saturday when the final decorating work will be completed before they hit the water for the sea trials at 3 p.m.
The museum will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m on Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, with the tug John Purves, the museum’s historic floating vessel, open for deck tours Saturday for a nominal fee. Museum entrance is $10 for adults, $5 for youth (5-17), with museum members and children 4 and under admitted free.
The concession stand, featuring freshly caught whitefish sandwiches, brats, burgers, and assorted refreshments, will be open at 4 p.m. on Friday, and serve throughout the day Saturday.
Boat registrations are taken up to Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
